Co-Design for Intergenerational Communication Tools.
Bridging generational gaps in mobile communication through co-design with grandparents and grandchildren
Our research explores grandparent–grandchild (GP–GC) communication in an era where family structures and geographic distance reduce face-to-face interaction, shifting much of their relationship maintenance to mobile communication. Through interviews and co-design workshops with older GPs and younger adult GCs, we identified distinct communication patterns, challenges, and needs. Our findings outline a design space for mobile technologies to bridge intergenerational gaps—positioning them as flexible multi-modality platforms, mediators of conversation, and heritage interfaces. We propose design implications that move beyond message exchange, aiming to strengthen relationships and support the holistic well-being of both generations.
